Me and the Cottonwood Tree

An Untethered Boyhood

Born in small-town Arizona in 1933, Herb Bryce grew up during a time of great change in America. His was a childhood of freedom—getting into trouble and, with the loving support of his family, managing to get himself out of it.

While writing this book, I’ve come to see how much my childhood revolved around cottonwood trees. One of my fondest memories is of my grandma sitting in the shade of a cottonwood tree, knitting and watching her kids play on the swing. I loved to climb cottonwoods, and swing from cottonwoods, and attempt to build tree houses in cottonwoods, and sneak off to meet girls using cottonwoods, and occasionally fall out of cottonwoods.
